Only five per cent of Phuket island's coastline was seriously damaged by the tsunami and educated investors realised the tsunami was an unprecedented natural occurrence. Since last December 26, the property market has not suffered on Phuket. Bangkok Bank has broken ranks with the Thai banking establishment to become the first Thai bank to offer mortgages targeted firmly at foreigners wanting to buy property in Thailand.
The mortgages are fairly limited in scope – they can be applied only to condos; the buyer must come up with the first 50% of the purchase price; and the mortgage term is only 10 years – but they are being hailed as a breakthrough by property developers and real estate agents.

Two globetrotters, one from Bangkok and the other one from Stockholm met in 2000 on a live-aboard diving vessel by the Similan Islands outside southern Thailand. A few years later after travelling the world together taking aspects of life into consideration they decided to make Surin Beach in Phuket their new home. | Phuket Carnival dates announced (Phuket Gazette Nov 2008) |
PATONG: This year’s Phuket Carnival will take place from December 15 to 20 at Patong Beach, some six weeks after the traditional starting date of November 1. Phuket Deputy Mayor Chairat Sukban said this year’s events will differ slightly from carnivals in past years, which have featured top rock acts including Modern Dog and even a performance once by the full Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

| Big Buddha gets big bell (Phuket Gazette Oct 2008) |
KARON: Work on the the enormous Buddha image in the Nakkerd Hills is now about 90% complete and a huge bronze bell was installed at the site to mark King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day on Thursday. The one-million baht bell, which weighs one metric ton, was a gift from the Rassada Cooperative Credit Union.
